Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most often made of hyaluronic acid, that add volume beneath the skin to smooth lines and restore facial contours lost to ageing. At Beauty Factory SD in San Diego we use Juvéderm® and Restylane® for lips, cheeks, under-eyes, nasolabial folds and jawline. Most last six months to two years.

Where a wrinkle relaxer stops a muscle from folding the skin, a filler replaces what time has taken out from underneath it. The two solve different problems, and many patients are best served by both.

What it treats

As facial tissues thin, lines become etched around the nose and mouth and the cheeks look a little hollow. Fillers replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips and restore a more youthful appearance. Certain fillers also stimulate your body's own collagen production, replacing lost collagen over time for longer-lasting results.

  • Lips — augmentation, definition and symmetry

  • Cheeks — sculpting and mid-face volume

  • Under-eyes — hollowing and shadowing

  • Nasolabial folds — the lines from nose to mouth corners

  • Marionette lines — from mouth corners downward

  • Temples — hollowing at the sides of the forehead

  • Jawline and chin — shaping and definition

  • Neck lines

  • Backs of the hands

How it works

Fillers add volume to facial tissue through their active ingredient, hyaluronic acid — a substance that occurs naturally in the human body and is largely responsible for the skin's youthful suppleness.

The gel is placed at a specific depth in a specific plane, and it holds the tissue above it in a new position. Most of today's dermal fillers are entirely natural in this sense, and the hyaluronic acid ones are broken down and absorbed by the body over time.

The products we use

Our practitioners build a personalised treatment plan around these rather than applying a fixed protocol — the product, the volume and the placement all follow your face and your goal.

What to expect

A filler appointment usually runs thirty to forty-five minutes. Mild bruising or swelling may be present for up to a week, and depending on the patient and the treatment you may see minor swelling and bruising for up to ten days after your visit.

You can resume normal daily activities immediately, but avoid strenuous physical activity until any swelling has gone down. Other potential risks are discussed with you at the time of consultation and treatment.

Results and timeline

Unlike a wrinkle relaxer, a filler result is visible immediately — though it will not be your final result until swelling settles over the following one to two weeks.

How long it lasts depends on the product used and on your individual skin. Typically most injectables last between six months and two years.

Are fillers safe?

Yes. Our products are FDA-approved and the procedure is minimally invasive. Injectables are a genuine alternative to cosmetic surgery for volume loss, with a fraction of the recovery.

That said, this is a medical procedure performed with a needle in the face, and outcome depends heavily on the injector's anatomical knowledge. It is worth asking who is holding the syringe — at Beauty Factory SD, that is a physician or a nurse practitioner.

Who is a candidate

Fillers suit healthy adults whose concern is lost volume, deepening folds visible at rest, or a feature they would like reshaped. They are not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection at the treatment site, or with a known allergy to a product component.

If your lines only appear when you move — when you frown, squint or raise your brows — a wrinkle relaxer will serve you better than a filler. The free consultation exists to sort this out before anything is injected.

Questions about dermal fillers

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a natural way to fill depleted facial features or wrinkles and stimulate collagen. They plump and lift the skin gently to treat volume loss caused by the body's natural ageing process, or to plump wrinkles, lines and scars. Certain dermal fillers can stimulate the body's natural collagen production to replace lost collagen over time for longer-lasting results. Most of today's dermal fillers are 100% natural.

How do dermal fillers work?

Fillers add volume to the facial tissue through their active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the human body. As facial tissues thin out, lines become etched around the nose and mouth and cheeks look a little hollow. Dermal fillers replace lost volume to help smooth wrinkles, plump the lips and restore a more youthful appearance.

What areas can be treated with filler?

Lips, cheeks, under-eyes, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, temples, neck lines, jawline and the backs of the hands.

What are the possible side effects?

Mild bruising or swelling may be present for up to a week. Other potential risks are discussed at the time of consultation and treatment.

How long does dermal filler last?

This depends on the product used and on individual skin types. Typically most injectables last between 6 months and 2 years.

Are injectable procedures safe?

Yes. Our products are FDA-approved and minimally invasive. Injectables are a great alternative to cosmetic surgery.

What is the recovery period like after receiving dermal filler?

Depending on the patient and the type of treatment, you may have some minor swelling and bruising for up to ten days after your visit. You can resume your normal daily activities, but avoid extreme physical activity until any swelling goes down.

Do you offer Sculptra or Radiesse?

Those are biostimulatory fillers — rather than adding volume directly, they prompt your own body to produce collagen over a series of sessions, which is a different treatment plan and a different timeline from a hyaluronic acid filler. The products we publish are Juvéderm and Restylane, both hyaluronic acid. Ask at your consultation what is currently available.

What this treats

Concerns we use it for

Nasolabial folds

Nasolabial folds are the creases running from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Marionette lines

Marionette lines run downward from the corners of the mouth toward the jaw, forming as lower-face volume is lost and skin descends past the mouth corner.

Thin or flattening lips

Lips thin with age as hyaluronic acid and collagen are lost, the border definition softens and the upper lip lengthens.

Under-eye hollows

Under-eye hollowing is a loss of fat and bone support beneath the lower eyelid, which casts a shadow often mistaken for a dark circle.

Wrinkle Relaxers

Wrinkle relaxers — BOTOX®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau® — are purified proteins injected in very small amounts to relax the specific facial muscles that fold the skin.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, prompting the body to produce new collagen and elastin as it heals.
