Thin lips: what changes with age and what filler can do
What causes it
Lips are largely made of the same hyaluronic acid that fillers are, and the body produces steadily less of it over time. Volume falls, but so do three subtler things that matter just as much to how a mouth reads.
The vermilion border — the ridge outlining the lip — softens, so the edge loses definition and lipstick starts to travel. The philtral columns above the upper lip flatten. And the distance between the base of the nose and the top of the lip lengthens, so less of the lip is visible even before any volume is lost.
Sun exposure and smoking accelerate all of it, and both contribute to the fine vertical lines around the mouth that often arrive alongside.
Treatment options
| Option | What it addresses | Results appear | Lasts | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Hyaluronic acid lip filler | Volume, border definition, philtral columns, asymmetry. | Immediate, settling over 2 weeks | 6 months – 2 years | At Beauty Factory SD |
Filler to the surrounding perioral area | Support and structure around the mouth, for lines beyond the lip itself. | Immediate | 6 months – 2 years | At Beauty Factory SD |
Microneedling | Fine vertical lines and skin texture above the lip. | Weeks, over a course | Maintained with repeat sessions | At Beauty Factory SD |
Lip lift surgery | Shortens a long upper lip. Structural, and permanent. | After healing | Permanent | Not offered here |
What we would recommend
Hyaluronic acid filler, placed against what has actually changed. That is rarely "more volume" alone — restoring the border and the philtral columns often does more for how a lip reads than adding bulk to the body of it, and it is what separates a lip that looks like yours from one that looks done.
Start conservatively. Filler can be added two weeks later once swelling has settled; it cannot be as easily taken away. Our practitioners build a personalised treatment plan tailored to your goals rather than working from a fixed volume.
One of our patients described the outcome she wanted well: "subtly plumper lips and symmetry", with the small wrinkles around the mouth gone. That is the brief most people actually have.
What it won't fix
Filler will not shorten a long upper lip. If the distance between your nose and lip has increased, adding volume can make the area heavier rather than younger — the treatment that addresses length is surgical.
It will not remove deep vertical smoker's lines on its own. Support helps, but the lines themselves are a skin-quality problem, and resurfacing or microneedling addresses them more directly.
It will not give you someone else's mouth. Lip proportion is constrained by your own anatomy, and pushing past it is exactly how the overfilled look happens — a lip that no longer matches the face it is on.
And it will not last as long here as elsewhere. Lips move constantly and are well supplied with blood, so filler is metabolised faster than in the mid-face.

Common questions
How long does lip filler last?
Typically 6 months to 2 years depending on the product used and individual skin types, though lips sit at the shorter end of that range because they move constantly and are well vascularised.
How swollen will I be afterwards?
Lips swell more than most areas. Mild bruising or swelling may be present for up to a week, and minor swelling can last up to ten days. Judge your result at two weeks, not the next morning.
How do I avoid looking overfilled?
Start with a conservative amount and add at a review appointment once swelling has settled. Treating border definition and the philtral columns rather than only adding volume also does more for a natural result.
Can filler fix uneven lips?
Yes — asymmetry is one of the things lip filler addresses well, and it is often what patients notice most in the result. Placement is planned around your existing anatomy.
